Triangles – Types & Properties of Triangles

Triangles are categorized as per the length of their sides as well as the measurement of the angles of any triangle. The triangle is known to be a typical shape that is utilized in buildings because of its stiffness & stability. Learning these features enables the students to apply the knowledge to a variety of real-world challenges.

In this article, we are going to study the various types of triangles as well as the properties of triangles. Students should visit the Cuemath website to know more about the topic.

Let’s Know How to Calculate the Perimeter of Triangle

It’s very simple to find the perimeter of any given triangle. There are three sides to any triangle. To calculate the perimeter of a triangle you need to sum up the three sides.

If suppose we have a triangle named EFG, the sides of the triangle are EF, FG, GE respectively. To find the perimeter of this triangle we need to add all the given sides.

Therefore, the perimeter of the triangle is EF+GF+GE.

Types of Triangles

Triangles can be classified into various types based on the sides, the angles of any given triangle.

Let’s first classify triangles into various types on the basis of the three sides of a triangle.

  • Equilateral Triangle – An equilateral triangle is defined as a triangle in which all the three sides of any given triangle are in equal lengths. If let’s say there’s a triangle named PQR, then all the three sides of the triangle that are PQ, QR, RP are all of the same lengths. In other words, PQ=QR=RP.

  • Isosceles Triangle – An isosceles triangle is defined as a triangle in which any two sides of a triangle are equal in length. If let’s say there’s a triangle named PQR, then any two sides of the triangle of all the three sides PQ, QR, RP are equal in length. In other words, either PQ=QR or QR=RP or RP=PQ.

  • Scalene Triangle – A scalene triangle is defined as a triangle in which none of the sides of the triangle are equal in size. If let’s say there’s a triangle named PQR, then all the three sides of the triangle PQ, QR, RP are not equal in length. In other words, either PQ is not equal to QR & QR is not equal to RP & RP is not equal to PQ.

Properties of Triangle

  • Any given triangle has three sides.
  • Any given triangle has a total of three angles which when added sum upto 180 degrees.
  • If you have been given all the lengths of a triangle then the perimeter of a triangle is equal to the sum of all the sides of the given triangle.

Solved Examples

Example 1: Riya has a triangle. The three sides of the triangle have the following measures – 12 cm, 14 cm, 6 cm. Calculate the perimeter.

Solution: We already know how to find the perimeter of any given triangle, all we need to do is add up all the sides of the triangle.

Let’s note down all the information given in the question,

First side = 12 cm

Second side = 14 cm

Third side = 6 cm

Perimeter of triangle = First side+ Second side+ Third Side

Therefore, perimeter of triangle = 12 cm+ 14 cm+ 6 cm = 32 cm

Example 2: You have been given the lengths of 3 sides of a triangle  4cm, 5 cm and 6 cm. Calculate the perimeter of the triangle.

Solution: We already know how to find the perimeter of any given triangle, all we need to do is add up all the sides of the triangle.

Let’s note down all the information given in the question,
